First Nations Health Learning Objectives
Goals:
My learning goals for this course are to understand the common health issues faced by first nations people and how history has contributed to them, to learn how first nations cultural beliefs can conflict with modern medicine and how to utilize both sources for treatment, and finally to be aware of cultural differences and challenges that may arise within psychiatric nursing.
How they were met:
I believe my learning goals were reached this semester through utilizing the textbook, participating in online postings and discussions and identifying the historical issues such as colonization abuse and the residential schools. This course also taught me about the different indigenous beliefs and knowledge related to health, medicine and healing. This will help me to identify some of the challenges psychiatric nurses may face when delivering and offering culturally sensitive, specific mental health care within the Canadian healthcare systems.
