Learning Objectives
My learning goals for this course are to build on my knowledge and communication skills that I already have from working with elderly patients, to have a better understanding of the disease progression as well as how different people can be affected and show different stages of the disease process. Another thing I want to learn is how to care for the elderly in clinical setting vs an emergency setting which is how I currently interact with geriatric patients.
My Learning objectives listed above for this semester tied in nicely with our practicum. My main focus was to work on communication skills and interactions with older adults in facilities. I believe I achieved this though Older Adult Theory and Older Adult Clinical combined.
As for understanding the disease progression better I learned that through building therapeutic relationships with residents at our care facility. Once I got to know each of the residents I could see how different people were affected by cognitive impairment and chronic disease. Giving medications to my patients also helped me tie in the pharmacological aspect of the diseases process and how they are treated thus giving me a better understanding of the full picture. The following Learning Plans for communication and medication administration cover my learning goals from the beginning of the program and were learned through hands on experience during my practicum.
