Introduction to Philosophy Learning Objectives
Goals:
To be honest I’m fairly nervous about this course. I have a strong medical background but know nothing of philosophy. After reading chapter one and having a mini meltdown my main goal is to not over think, over-analyze and stress out about what is the right or wrong answer, instead see each question from both sides and open up my critical thinking skills. I’m hoping this helps me enjoy and engage in the course and learn more about philosophy without cringing. I also want to connect the concept of philosophy to how it is applied in psychiatric nursing practice.
How they were met:
I believe my learning goals were reached this semester through utilizing the textbook, participating in online postings and discussions and identifying the described philosophical questions about existence, morality, values, logic, reasoning, personal nature, free will, epistemology and the relation of the mind and body. Answering the weekly questions helped me to critically reflect on how philosophy can be incorporated into my nursing practice. I am also able to identify how philosophical thinking can help me to question things and look for the reasoning and logic not just judge them by face value. This course also taught me to appreciate every individual has different beliefs and views on life and existence, by incorporating this into my nursing practice it helps me understand that patients may see treatment decisions and health care options differently from me.
