Study Skills Learning Objectives
Goals:
My first goal for this course is to navigate through the online Moodle learning system and become proficient at engaging in online discussion participation. My second goal for this course is to learn how to conduct research online through the EBSCO database. My final goal for this course is to identify the importance of interpreting my own learning and study styles in order to excel in online courses.
How they were met:
I believe my goals were met for this course through research practice and online engagement in the forums and on the EBSCO database. The more I played around online, the more confident I became in navigating the site. I learned my study style through participating in the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) where after reviewing my strengths and weaknesses on the LASSI module I decide to focus on two weaknesses; motivation and time management. My goals for motivation were to start setting some daily goals and work on self-discipline. My strategy for goal setting is to really focus on using my calendar and making sure assignment and exam dates are recorded properly. I also need to set daily goals for finishing forum posts, readings and projects. To help with my self-discipline I need to shut off all distractions like my cell phone, tv, music and really focus on my work for the day. Another way to help avoid house hold chore distractions is to take myself out of the environment by studying in different places such as a quiet coffee shop or the public library. My strategies for dealing with time management are to use my resources and keep things organized. Shortcuts to links on my desktop, having paper and a pen within reach, having my family watch my daughter for an hour, these are all things to help cut down on the time I spend distracted and help me focus on what’s important. I also need to work on balance. Making sure I take time off from studying to spend with my daughter before she goes to bed, a lunch break to meet a friend, or going for a run to clear my head. These are all things I need to do for myself to help me stay on track and not burnout.
Reflection:
Reflecting back on the above goals for time management and motivation I have to say I mastered both of those now in the sixth semester. It was not always easy but learning the balance between work, school and life while staying organized through daily planning helped me pull through and monitor my progress making adjustments as needed.
