Psychiatric Care of the Older Adult Theory Learning Objectives
Goals:
My learning goals for this course are to build on my knowledge and communication skills that I already have from working with elderly patients, to have a better understanding of the disease progression as well as how different people can be affected and show different stages of the disease process. Another thing I want to learn is how to care for the elderly in clinical setting vs an emergency setting which is how I currently interact with geriatric patients.
How they were met:
I believe I covered all my learning goals from the start of the semester through this course as well as in our clinical. Learning about the different disease process through our reading and watching it in our patients at the care homes really tied the two together. Learning about elder speak and different communication techniques for talking to patients with cognitive impairment really helped me put it to use in the clinical shifts as many of our residents there were in different stages of dementia. Giving medication for the diseases and learning what medications they take and how they take them helped give the full picture into elderly care.
