Introduction to Aboriginal Peoples in Canada Learning Objectives
Goals:
My learning goals for this program are to expand my knowledge of first nation’s culture and stigmas and what we as RPNs can do to reduce the struggles they face when asking for help. I’m also interested in learning where the drug and alcohol abuse stems from as I see it in many of my patients as a paramedic, and how we as RPNs treat them compared to non-native drug and alcohol patients, is it the same, or is the culture so different it is approached by a different angle? I’m hoping this course can answer some of these questions and give me a better knowledge and understanding of the culture and belief system of first nations.
How they were met:
I believe my learning goals were reached this semester. I learned about the stigma and struggles of the first nations people and the background behind why it is the way it is. I’m sure in our next first nation’s class we will touch more on the drug and alcohol abuse but I developed a stronger background in how it started. The residential schools seem to be the stem of many of the problems our Canadian first nations have and learning about it and what they went through is the first step in understanding their hardships. Their history, culture and traditions are all so important to them and very interesting for me to learn. This class gave me more insight into their culture and background which I think will help me be more empathetic towards them as patients.
