Therapeutic Relationships and Communication Skills Learning Objectives
Goals:
My goals for this course consist of being able to describe the principle models of therapeutic relationships and the phases within these models, to be able to identify communication models and specific communication techniques and to apply this knowledge within an interpersonal context
How they were met:
I believe my goals for this course were met through online participation and self-awareness. It is important for our practice as psychiatric nurses to relate and develop therapeutic relationships with our patients in order to communicate effectively. I also learned why the ‘self’ is such an important aspect of psychiatric nursing as it helps us engage in self-awareness, we cannot help another human being if we are not first aware of ourselves. I learned a range of communication tools and skills from this course as well as principal models and the phases of therapeutic relationships which I look forward to practicing in our first practicum next semester.
